How Many Dogs or Cats Can You Have in Florida?

The number of dogs or cats you can legally own in Florida depends on where you live. In the Sunshine State, regulations vary from municipality to municipality. Therefore, looking up your municipality's animal ordinances is crucial to ensure you are in compliance with the law. In the City of Fort Pierce, for example, you are limited to a total of five dogs, cats, or other domesticated animals. In the City of Miami Springs, up to four dogs are allowed on residential properties of less than one acre. On residential properties of 1 but less than 2 acres, up to six dogs are allowed.

A maximum of eight dogs is allowed on residential properties of 2 acres or more in Miami Springs, FL. The Town of Palm Beach allows no more than a total of seven pets per household. No more than four domesticated animals are allowed per dwelling unit in Holly Hill, a city in Volusia County, FL. Check the following Florida municipalities' animal regulations.

Miami, FL

In the City of Miami, up to four dogs are allowed per property of less than one acre, or per residence unit in a transect zone that allows multifamily uses. On properties of one acre but less than two acres, up to six dogs are allowed. A maximum of eight dogs is allowed on properties of two acres or more. Keeping more than those numbers of dogs on a residential property constitutes a kennel, which requires a kennel license, according to Chapter 6, Article II, Sec. 6-36 of Miami's municipal code. Miami has a pooper scooper law requiring every dog owner in the City to immediately remove and dispose of any feces deposited by their dog(s) on public property or private property other than that of the dog's owner. Miami's municipal code does not restrict the number of cats a household can have.

St. Petersburg, FL

A maximum of five adult dogs is allowed per single-family residence in St. Petersburg, Florida. At a multi-family residence, no more than three adult dogs may be kept. As per Chapter 4, Sec. 4-8 of St. Petersburg's municipal code, an adult dog is the base measurement unit for the maximum number of pets allowed. For example, one adult dog, according to the city code, is the equivalent of two cats. Four cats are equivalent to two adult dogs. That means you can have three dogs and four cats per single-family residence in St. Petersburg. Further, according to the city code, one adult dog is equivalent to one miniature sheep or goat. Two adult dogs are equivalent to one Vietnamese pig.

Port St. Lucie, FL

You can have no more than five domestic pets in any combination in a residential zoning district within Port St. Lucie, Florida. Animals that are considered domestic pets under the city's municipal code include but are not limited to dogs, cats, and miniature Vietnamese potbellied pigs. If you desire to own more than 5 pets, you may do so only after obtaining a permit from the animal control division. All dogs, cats, and potbellied pigs residing in Port St. Lucie are required to be vaccinated and licensed.

Palm Bay, FL

A maximum of four dogs is allowed per dwelling unit in the following zoning districts within Palm Bay, Florida: RE, RS-1, RS-2, RS-3, SF-1, SF-2, SRE, RM- 10, RM 15, RM-20, RMH, and PUD. According to the City Code, this restriction applies only to dogs six months of age or older. If you own more than four dogs in those districts, you're required to obtain a certificate from the Palm Bay Code Compliance Division to temporarily keep such greater number within 90 days. However, the certificate will remain valid until you reduce the number of dogs you have to four or fewer, at which time the certificate shall expire. The number of cats you can have in the city of Palm Bay isn't restricted.

Coral Springs, FL

In Coral Springs, FL, there is a limit of three cats and three dogs per residence in all residential zoning districts, except RS-1 districts. Kittens and puppies under four months of age are not counted towards the maximum number of cats and dogs, according to the City Code. Each dog and cat four months of age or older residing in Coral Springs is required to be licensed and wear the license tag on a collar or harness around their neck at all times.

Pompano Beach, FL

You are permitted to own four dogs or four cats, or any combination of both not exceeding a total of four animals in the city of Pompano Beach, FL. A maximum of five dogs and/or five cats is allowed per parcel of land of one acre or less in Deltona, FL. For parcels of land greater than one acre, one additional dog and/or cat is allowed for each one-fifth acre over one acre until the parcel reaches two acres in size. No more than ten dogs and/or cats may be kept on parcels of land two acres or greater. These limitations, according to the City Code, do not apply to dogs and cats under 16 weeks of age, nor to dogs and cats kept in agriculturally zoned areas. Also, the limits on cats and dogs in non-agriculturally zoned areas do not apply to hamsters, gerbils, ferrets, mice, guinea pigs, non-vicious and non-venomous reptiles, parrots and other small birds, and rabbits.

Deerfield Beach, FL

Each household in Deerfield Beach, FL, is limited to six domesticated household pets. Animals that are considered "domesticated household pets" under the Deerfield Beach City Code include cats, dogs, parrots, parakeets, canaries, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, turtles, non-venomous snakes, ferrets, and reptiles that are not a danger to animals or humans. Potbellied pigs are not deemed to be domesticated household pets under the city code. However, the keeping of no more than two ducks is deemed to be included within the scope of domesticated household pets.

Daytona Beach, FL

A total of four adult dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, or ferrets is allowed per residential dwelling unit in Daytona Beach, FL. In addition, you can own up to four adult house geckos, iguanas, or parrots. You can also own gerbils, hamsters, and mice, provided that the total volume of their cages does not exceed 40 cubic feet, according to Daytona Beach's municipal code Chapter 14, Sec. 14-12.
