Colorado has no state-wide limit on the number of dogs or cats you can own. However, most cities in the Centennial State have their own varying limits. In most Colorado cities, you are limited to four dogs and four cats. Your city's municipal code will determine the number of pets you can legally own in Colorado. Take the allowable number of pets per household in the following Colorado municipalities for example.

Colorado Springs, CO

The City of Colorado Springs limits each household to four cats and four dogs over four months of age. In addition, a single litter of kittens or puppies aged 4 months through 8 months may be kept, according to Colorado Springs' municipal code. You can also have up to two hoofed pets and ten rabbits in addition to the maximum number of dogs or cats allowed per household. All dogs and cats in Colorado Springs are required to be vaccinated and licensed. If a property has more pets than the number allowed, it may be deemed a kennel, which is not allowed in residential zones.

Denver, CO

In the City of Denver, you can have up to five dogs and cats combined, of which no more than three can be dogs. For example, if you can have one dog, you can have four cats. You can have no more than three dogs if you have two cats. If you have five cats, you can have zero dogs. These limits are dictated by Denver's Zoning Code, and they apply to all zone districts in the city, according to KDVR. There is a leash law in Denver requiring all dog owners to prevent their pets from running at large. Denver municipal code Chapter 8, Sec. 8-31 requires all cats and dogs over the age of six months in the city to be vaccinated for rabies by a licensed Colorado vet. Pit bulls are restricted in Denver. To own a pit bull in the city, you need to apply for and obtain a breed-restricted permit.

Aurora, CO

The City of Aurora's municipal code limits each household to four dogs. In addition, you may keep one litter of puppies until the age of four months. There is also a limit of five cats per household in Aurora. For each cat and dog over the age of six months, a city license is required. You are required to have the city license tag securely attached to a collar or harness, which your cats or dogs should wear at all times. Furthermore, you're required to have your cats or dogs sterilized as soon as they're past the age of six months.

Lakewood, CO

There is a limit of five household pets per residence in Lakewood, Colorado. However, of the five pets, no more than three may be dogs or cats. That means you can not own more than 3 dogs or 3 cats in the city. You can, for example, have three dogs and two cats or three cats and two dogs. Service animals are allowed in addition to the maximum number of household pets. As per Title 6, Sec. 6.05.015 of Lakewood's municipal code, up to three female dwarf goats may be kept as household pets in the appropriate zoned district. However, dwarf goats are counted towards the total number of household pets allowed per residence.

Thornton, CO

According to Chapter 6, Sec. 6-37 of the City of Thornton's municipal code, you can have four dogs or four cats, or a combination of both totaling no more than four. The keeping of one Vietnamese potbellied pig as a pet is permitted in Thornton. You can have three dogs and one potbellied pig or three cats and one potbellied pig per residential dwelling unit. These restrictions, however, do not apply to dogs or cats under three months old, nor to animals kept in an agricultural district.

Arvada, CO

A maximum of three dogs or four cats is permitted per resident in Arvada, Colorado. Per Chapter 14, Sec. 14-126 of Arvada's municipal code, dogs and cats may be kept in any combination not totaling more than four per household. Up to two pot-bellied pigs are permitted as household pets in Arvada. You may keep dogs and pot-bellied pigs in any combination not exceeding three in total. In addition to the limits on the number of dogs, cats, and pot-bellied pigs, you can have up to 15 other animals, such as chickens or miniature goats.

Westminster, CO

No more than four dogs or four cats are permitted per residence in Westminster, Colorado. All Westminster dog and cat owners are required to restrain their animals by physical means from running at large. Westminster has three off-leash dog parks, including Big Dry Creek Dog Park, Little Dry Creek Dog Park, and Westminster Hills Dog Park. These parks allow only licensed and spayed or neutered dogs, according to Westminster's Animal Management.

Greeley, CO

You can have up to four dogs or cats over six months of age in the municipality of Greeley, according to the Weld County Zoning Code. Greeley's municipal code prohibits you from allowing your dogs or cats to be at large. A dog or cat is deemed to be at large when it is off its owner's premises and not restrained. Every owner of a dog or cat over the age of six months within the municipality is required to obtain a license tag for such dog or cat. In addition, you're required to have your cat or dog wear a collar or harness, to which you must attach the license tag.

Pueblo, CO

In Pueblo, Colorado, up to four cats and four dogs, or a total of eight pets, are allowed per residence. A multiple-animal license is required to exceed this limit, which does not apply to animals kept in agricultural zones, according to Pueblo's municipal code. Every dog and cat residing in Pueblo is required to be vaccinated and wear the vaccination tag on a collar or harness.
