How Many Dogs or Cats Can You Have in Arizona?

An Australian Shepherd and an Orange Maine Coon Cat

Arizona, like many other states, has no state-wide legislation restricting the number of pets you can have. However, your city may have its own regulations. In other words, the maximum number of dogs or cats you can own in Arizona depends on where you live. In some Arizona cities, each residence is limited to three dogs or four cats. You can check your city's animal ordinance online to determine the allowable number of pets per household in your area. Take the following Arizona cities' pet limit laws for example.

Goodyear, AZ

In Goodyear, Arizona, each residential property is limited to four household pets, including no more than one potbellied pig. For example, you can have 2 dogs, 1 cat, and 1 one potbellied pig. Or, if you are a dog person, you can 4 dogs and not other pets. Goodyear's municipal code prohibits the keeping of any animals that disturb the peace by loud noises at any time of the day or night. The city has a leash law that requires all dogs to be restrained by a leash, not more than six feet in length when on public streets, public parks, or public property.

San Tan Valley, AZ

In San Tan Valley, AZ, you are allowed to have a maximum of four dogs, according to Pinal County's municipal code. Licenses and rabies vaccinations are required for all dogs over 3 months of age residing in Pinal County. No dog is permitted to be at large at any time in San Tan Valley unless the dog is physically restrained by a leash. You can have up to four cats in San Tan Valley, albeit the Pinal County Code does not restrict the number of cats residents can have.

Yuma, AZ

You can have up to 6 dogs or 6 cats or any combination thereof without a permit in Yuma, Arizona. According to Yuma's municipal code, the keeping of seven or more dogs, cats, or any combination thereof requires a city kennel license. Each dog and cat over three months of age kept within the city is required to be licensed and registered. In addition, each dog and cat is required to wear a collar or harness, to which the license tag is attached. A cat that is implanted with a microchip by a veterinarian is exempted from this requirement.

Flagstaff, AZ

In Flagstaff, AZ, a maximum of 4 dogs and cats is allowed per property up to one acre in size. For every additional 1/2 acre, one additional animal is allowed, up to a maximum of 10 animals, according to Coconino County's animal-keeping ordinance. Flagstaff's noise ordinance prohibits dog owners from permitting their dogs to bark, howl, or make any other noise in such an unreasonable manner as to disturb the peace and quiet of any person or persons. All dogs three months of age or older in Flagstaff are required to be vaccinated, licensed, and have a dog tag.

Maricopa, AZ

In the City of Maricopa, a maximum of four dogs is allowed in all zoning districts except rural districts. This restriction, according to the City Code, does not apply to small animals kept in a residence, including cats, fish, small birds, rodents, and reptiles. Dogs confined in enclosures are required to be kept at least 20 feet from the nearest residential structure on an adjacent lot.

Prescott Valley, AZ

In Prescott Valley, Arizona, you are limited to four licensed dogs. The Town Code does not restrict the number of cats you can own. However, it does prohibit the running at large of cats and dogs. By the Town's definition, "at large" means the animal is neither confined by an enclosure nor physically restrained by a leash.

Sierra Vista, AZ

The City of Sierra Vista's municipal code allows no more than four dogs per household. Every dog owner in the city is required to have their pets vaccinated and licensed. Further, you're required, as a dog owner, to have your dog wear a collar or harness, to which the license tag is securely fastened. There is no limit on cats, although all cats are required to be vaccinated against rabies and wear the vaccination tag on a collar or harness.

Bullhead City, AZ

A maximum of 3 dogs and 3 cats over the age of four months old is allowed per household in Bullhead City, Arizona. Bullhead City offers a "Pet Fancier" permit for pet owners moving into the City with more dogs or cats than allowed. A Bullhead City license is required for all dogs residing in the City. According to the City's Animal Enforcement Officers, the license has to be worn by your dog at all times.

Apache Junction, AZ

In Apache Junction, AZ, a class 1 personal dog kennel permit is required to own from 4 to 5 dogs over 3 months of age. A class 2 permit is required to own from 6 to 8 dogs over 3 months of age. However, you are not required to obtain a personal dog kennel permit if you have 3 or fewer dogs over 3 months of age, according to Apache Junction's municipal code. All dogs covered by a personal dog kennel permit in Apache Junction are required to be vaccinated, licensed, and sterilized. As a cat owner in Apache Junction, there is no limit on the number of felines you can have.
