10 Photos of Australian Retrievers (Golden Aussies): Aussie Golden Retriever Mix

Get acquainted with the Australian Retriever, aka Golden Aussie, a cross between the Australian Shepherd and Golden Retriever, two of the most popular dog breeds in the U.S.! With both parent breeds being high-energy dogs, the Australian Retriever has so much energy it will need regular exercise. The Australian Retriever or Golden Aussie, as we know it today, originated in the United States in 2005, according to Wag Walking. This hybrid dog is known for its intelligence, herding instincts, and love of water.

Golden Aussies coats, which are usually coarse and a bit wavy, come in various colors including black, red, blue merle, or a combination of white, black, or brown, depending on the parent dogs' color. Australian Shepherds come in four primary colors, which are Black, Red, Blue Merle, and Red Merle. Golden Retrievers, on the other hand, come in three primary colors: golden, dark golden, and light golden. Both the Aussie and the Golden Retriever have dense, water-repellent double coats, so the Australian Retriever's coat is a beautiful mix of its parent breeds.

By all accounts, Australian Retrievers are very smart, friendly, loyal, and easy to train, making them excellent family dogs.

Australian Retrievers are medium to large size dogs with a striking appearance and friendly temperament. They are very good with young kids and aren’t big barkers. Golden Aussies enjoy swimming and, like their parent breeds, are not sensitive to the weather so will do well in most climates. Adult Australian Retrievers typically measure 19-23 inches in height and weigh between 30 and 60 pounds, with males being somewhat heavier than females.

Australian Retrievers are very energetic, affectionate, and playful. However, they can be quite possessive over their belongings and their owner, a tendency that may need to be monitored when kids are around. As with all dogs, the Australian Retriever needs early socialization and obedient training. They are very smart and responsive and therefore are very easy to train. Golden Aussies do have herding instincts due to their Australian Shepherd ancestry but are overall good family pets.

Given their boundless energy, Australian Retrievers will need plenty of exercise, preferably twice a day, to stay healthy and happy. Both the Aussie and Golden Retriever need regular exercise, so the Golden Aussie will be much the same. Wag Walking recommends that you walk your Australian Retriever dog for at least 30 to 60 minutes a day to prevent boredom and any destructive behavior from setting in. Some good ways to keep your Golden Aussie active and stimulated include ball games and frisbee. Australian Retrievers are happiest when they have an activity to perform and a fenced-in yard to run in.

To keep their double, water-resistant coat looking its best, Australian Retrievers need regular grooming. It's generally recommended that you brush your Golden Aussie at least twice a week. You do not need to bath your dog more than once every 4-6 weeks if you brush it regularly. Check your dog's ears and teeth during grooming sessions. As with all breeds, Australian Retrievers' ears and teeth should be cleaned regularly. Also, their nails should be trimmed regularly to prevent splintering.

Australian Shepherd puppies and Golden Retriever puppies are undeniably charming. Needless to say, their offspring, the Australian Retriever, will be exceptionally irresistible. Like any puppy, the Golden Aussie puppy is curious, playful, and full of energy. To ensure your puppy grows into a well-mannered adult dog, training and socialization should begin from an early age. Adopting a puppy is a huge responsibility, so be ready for everything from teething challenges to middle-of-the-night potty breaks. Australian Retrievers are generally healthy dogs, and a responsible breeder will test breeding stock for health concerns such as Epilepsy, Hip Dysplasia, Bloat, Eye Problems, and Hypothyroidism, a condition that results from thyroid hormone deficiency.
