Australian Shepherds are known to be smart, alert, protective, active, and curious dogs. The breed's love for exploring combined with an unwavering loyalty to their owners, makes them devoted companion canines. If you have an Australian Shepherd, you probably know how curious they can be about other animals.
This news article is about Koda, a toy Aussie who enjoys watching the deer that graze through their neighborhood. On July 12th, 2024, Koda's owner posted a video on TikTok, that shows what happened when Koda came face to face with the deer. The hoofed ruminant ungulate seemed to be just as curious about the dog as the dog was about it. What unfolded next was nothing short of cute!
The video, which is captioned "They both said I’m outa here," begins with Koda, the toy Aussie watching the deer feeding on growing grass from across the street. The deer notices Koda as well, and the two animals approach each other courageously. Koda and the deer seem like they're considering becoming friends, the video shows.
However, both animals change their minds at the same time! The video below shows both animals' reactions to each other.

For a second, I think both animals are considering becoming friends but, as it turns out, it's a big NO for both of them! The video is cute at the end when Koda starts acting like a deer. While commenters all agreed that the interaction between both animals was cute, a user gave Koda's owner a warning.
@Just_Another_Dog_Mom cautioned, "Please be careful when it comes to dear, especially if it’s during baby/fawn season." @Just_Another_Dog_Mom continues, "They can get really aggressive and deer don’t stop until your puppy is dead." Koda's mom replied, saying she didn't know that and appreciated the advice, saying "I’ll make sure he keeps his distance."
Koda is an internet sensation, garnering over 100k followers on Instagram and 25k followers on TikTok. On June 25, 2024, Koda's owner announced on Instagram that they were moving from Montana to Colorado, where Koda would finally get a yard to play in. Koda's owner, Keelie, says she grew up in Colorado, where she met her partner, Reece, and the two began dating in high school.
Facts About Toy Australian Shepherds
To begin with, the Toy Australian Shepherd is not a recognized breed of dog by any kennel club. In other words, it is not a purebred dog. Rather, it is a hybrid between the Mini American Shepherd, aka Mini Aussie, and Papillon. Toy Aussies are known to be medium to high-energy dogs that are extremely smart and want a purpose. A full-grown Toy Aussie should stand around 10-14 inches tall and weigh between 12-17 pounds.
They are described in terms of temperament as faithful, affectionate, playful, sociable, and very smart dogs. Toy Aussies are not typically aggressive. However, they can be shy around large dogs. Generally, they don't bark much but will alert you of strangers. Their compact size means they are suitable for apartment living and can make great family pets. However, they are not recommended for sedentary pet owners due to their high energy levels.
